Personal thoughts and feelings about a particular topic the topic for discussion today is how to select a pair of speakers now normally what i have to do is be very rational and objective about how i review a piece of equipment and sometimes it gets a little technical this series is different i'm sharing with you. As i mentioned my own personal thoughts and feelings about a particular topic it's primarily aimed at people who are new or getting into this hobby but i'd be very interested in hearing from the audiophile community as well for them to share their advice and thoughts on this particular topic and that would be really beneficial in the comments section so you're overwhelmed with choice these days there's hundreds of speaker manufacturers out there how are you going to get from that to selecting one pair of speakers that you're going to be happy with well in the good old days perhaps. It was a little bit easier you used to go and spend a bunch of afternoons down at your local dealer demo a whole bunch of gear and eventually come up with something that you liked that's a little bit more problematic these days for a couple of reasons one is that people don't really have the time to do that anymore and secondly the likelihood is you probably haven't got a dealer on your doorstep who's probably going to entertain the idea anyway so you have to do your homework and i think the objective is to come up with a short list of three speakers which you then do eventually have to go and listen and if you've done your homework correctly. You're probably likely to come up with something that is going to serve you well for the long term now should you start with a pair of speakers first when you're putting together a hi-fi system and my advice is absolutely yes i'm not saying amplifiers and source components are important they are important but by far the biggest factor that influences how your sound system works is how your speakers interact in your room and that's perhaps the first area you need to consider when you're trying to kind of what i call narrow the field down of speakers out there so. Here you go for the best Bluetooth speakers under 2500. You have to have some understanding of the acoustical space and the positioning and setup of your speakers so let's talk about the acoustics first now when you're talking about the acoustics of your room there's something called a transitional frequency i'm not going to get into too much technical discussion in this Post that's perhaps something to explore in another Post and another time but what you need to understand is that the transitional frequency of most listening rooms is somewhere between 200 and 300 hertz depending on the size of your room and that sound waves behave differently below the transitional frequency than they do above the transitional frequency below the transitional frequency. We're talking about base energy here bass waves so they've got a large wavelength and a lot of energy how does this benefit you when you're deciding on a pair of speakers to choose for your particular room think of the base energy in your room as a series of high and low pressure points now what determines the extent of these high and low pressure points well there's a number of factors one of them being how much energy you put into the room if you've got bigger speakers that produce more bass you're putting more energy into the room and it's going to excite these room modes which are these areas of high and low pressure more than a speaker with less space energy but the unevenness of these pressure points is also going to be determined by the size of your room. The smaller your room is the more uneven these pressure points are and the further up the frequency range they extend which makes them more noticeable and another factor that determines these pressure points is how much bass energy is allowed to escape from your room so if you've got solid brick or solid stone constructed walls and there's a number of those walls that's going to trap more energy than say studied partitions which allow more of that energy to escape so. Here you go for the best 5.1 speakers in India under 7000. When you're selecting a pair of speakers and you're determining what's going to be suitable for your room you need to consider the construction and the size of the room and also the amount of base energy that that speaker is going to put into the room now that's going to be determined by the sensitivity of the speaker and also the size of the speaker and its frequency response so you're looking at specifications you want to look at how far down the speaker extends in terms of its frequency response and generally if you want a larger speaker and it's got higher sensitivity. It will probably have a more rolled off bass response basically when you're designing a pair of speakers you either design them to have more bass and low sensitivity or higher sensitivity and less bass so that's below the transitional frequency what happens above the transitional frequency well above the transitional frequency sound waves behave differently they become much more directional now this is a bit of an over simplification but you can think of them essentially like light waves reflecting off surfaces now. When you're considering a speaker you need to think about your room and how much natural absorption and how much natural diffraction it has and i'll explain what those mean so absorption is pretty much as the name suggests it's absorbing some of those reflections and that's determined by how much soft furnishings you have in your room so if you've got carpeted floors or rugs big couches heavy drapes other soft furnishings that will absorb some of that reflected energy diffraction is basically where the sound bounces off a surface and is basically scattered because it's an uneven surface. Now it turns out that our ears are pretty good at ignoring uh reflections where the sound scatters so that'll be where you've got you know book cases against walls or anything that breaks up the kind of flat surface of the wall paintings etc etc so if you're considering a speaker you need to think about how much natural absorption and how much natural diffraction you have in that room if you've got a room that has very little absorption and diffraction because you've got minimal amount of furnishings in there it's going to have a lot more reverberate energy it's going to sound more echoey and also a bright speaker is going to sound brighter still and the opposite is also true if you've got a room that has a lot of stuff in there a lot of soft furnishings a rolled off speaker is going to sound even more rolled off so that's another way in. Which you can perhaps start to narrow down the choice of speakers that you're considering for your room now a little note on room treatment here i'm not going to go into too much technical details because i'm going to do a video at some point in the future on room treatment and acoustics so what i will say is that some of these problems with bass higher frequencies reverberation etc can be reduced by bass traps absorption panels diffraction panels on the walls but you're better off picking a speaker that works well in your room in the first place kind of prevents the problem rather than trying to cure it afterwards by these kind of solutions they can be unsightly you need a lot of them for it to make a difference and they can get quite expensive so it's a case of prevention is better than the cure someone a lot wiser than me. Here you go for the best 2.1 speakers. I forget who said to me good sound in a room is basically 70 speaker setup 20 treatment and 10 the speaker itself so if you haven't seen my video on how to set up a pair of speakers i'd urge you to take a look at that because that will ensure once you've chosen your speaker that you get kind of the best out of it in terms of setting it up right so you should be able to choose a speaker now that works well in your room in terms of low frequencies and high frequencies the rest comes down to your own personal preferences and how you're going to set that speaker up in your room so let's talk about personal preferences, First i would focus on two aspects of performance the overall tonality of the speaker and its dynamic output okay so when i mean tone is it neutral is it warm sounding or is it on the brighter side what do you want to go for what kind of sound are you trying to achieve choose a speaker accordingly now when i'm talking about dynamics it's about how effortlessly a speaker will play in your room now you may be trying to put a small speaker in a large space. Think i can get away with it by adding a couple of sub woofers what those sub woofers will do was give you bass extension but that system will always sound a little like it lacks a little bit of energy and life because it's not all about just bass extension it's about how much energy is thrown out at higher frequencies mid-range and other frequencies as well and if you're trying to put a big massive speaker in a small room the likelihood is that you'll overload it with bass and excite a whole load of root modes as i mentioned earlier. You're probably listening relatively close up to those large speakers they may play loud but you may have other problems like driver integration problems that's basically where you're too close to a large speaker and if you move your head a couple of inches this side or that side the tonality changes and big speakers may not play particularly well at lower listening volumes in small spaces where you might be listening late at night and you want to listen quietly and it just lacks a little bit of life and you may have limitations in terms of how you're going to set up that speaker a lot of people have to have the speakers a lot closer to the wall than they would ideally like to be or ideally the speakers would like to be in terms of sound quality now there are speakers that are designed to work well close to walls and if you're choosing a speaker that needs to work in that particular scenario. You're better off with something that is designed for that purpose let's take proac as an example i have a pair of proact response 1scs small little bookshelf speaker that's reported it needs to be away from the walls it's big brother the d2 is front ported you'd think well actually probably get away with putting that closer to the walls right no base is omni-directional it doesn't have too much effect whether it's rear or front ported it's more about the design itself. Both those speakers need to be away from the walls d2 retails for two and a half three thousand pounds depending on the variant you go for the current version of my product response one ties which i think called the db 1 retails for a best part of 2 grand proact do another speaker called the tablet 10 i think there's a signature version as well there are a thousand to 1200 pounds considerably cheaper than both those speakers it's a sealed box design it's basically got a wider front baffle it's got less depth and its base response has been tuned so that it works well closer to walls it will outperform both of those speakers in that scenario and it's considerably cheaper. There you go For best 5.1 multimedia speakers in India. So as i say if you're going to have limitations in terms of your setup and positioning choose a speaker that's designed to work in that particular scenario the final thing i think i want to talk about is when you're doing your homework of course you're going to look at reviews and there are good reviews and bad reviews out there there are good reviewers and reviewers who i think perhaps are a little bit more biased so find out about the manufacturer find out about the designer read the reviews but look at reviews where people compare products to other products out there if they're not comparing it. They're saying it's the best product in the world and they compare it to anything i wouldn't hold a huge amount of weight and stock by that particular review there's no such thing as the best speaker out there it all depends on your own personal tastes your own scenario set up etc things we focused on when i in this video so if you focus on a speaker that works well in your room at low frequencies works well in your room at high frequencies works well with how you're going to set it up and position it has the right kind of dynamic output so it fills your room with sound according to the size of the Home theater speaker and the amount kind of volumes.
